Monthly Program Dinner: Wednesday, October 19th, 2016

Our monthly program dinners are scheduled for the- 3rd Wednesday of every month. The cost for the dinner is $20.00. Reservations must be confirmed by the Monday before the dinner. AND, if you must cancel, you must call Carolann with that information to avoid being charged for your dinner. Reservations and cancellations must be made with Carolann Besch at 883-4482.

Our speaker this evening is Anthony Chase.

cc-october-2016-newsletter1 cc-october-2016-newsletterTheater Historian Anthony Chase and cabaret chanteuse Kerrykate Abel talk about “The Last of the Red Hot Mammas,” Sophie Tucker (1887-1966). Chase will share his humorous and engaging style to recount the unique contributions of this legendary entertainer and Abel, Buffalo’s “First Lady of Cabaret,” will sing some of Tucker’s signature songs, including ‘Some of These Days,” “They’ll be Some Changes Made,” and “Red Hot Mamma.”

Ukrainian-born Tucker embodied 20th century American entertainment, first singing for tips at her parents kosher restaurant in Hartford, Connecticut, and eventually appearing in blackface, on the vaudeville stage, in burlesque, in the Ziegfeld Follies, on Broadway, on the Las Vegas strip, in Hollywood film, on radio, and finally, on television. Today, the Tucker legacy is obscured by the memory of her farewell television appearances, done later in life when she could no longer sing; and by Bette Midler, who has borrowed from and embellished on the true Tucker persona. Chase and Abel will seek to recreate what was magical about the late great Sophie Tucker — gone, but not forgotten! This should be a memorable evening!

There’s a group of people who want Western New Yorkers to stop thinking of Buffalo’s East Side as a separate part of the city. They hope their work and investment in those neighborhoods will help make Buffalo whole again.

Heidi Romer is leading the way. Her initiative, the Bailey Green Project is making a difference one step at a time. Established in 2008, the project’s first goal was to clean and green the area around Heidi’s business, Harmac Medical. When she realized most of her employees live in the Bailey neighborhood, she broadened her mission. We will learn about this project and its impact on the East Side community this evening.

Program dinners are scheduled on the 3rd Wednesday of the month. They are catered by Applewood’s Café.

Cost per person is $17.00—payable by check or cash to The College Club.
